Playwright’s Dedication
“For all the women who raised me.”
–Zora Howard, Playwright
Director’s Note
I first saw STEW in New York with my two pre-teen daughters. We knew right away it was something special and I was an instant admirer of Zora Howard’s ability to write such a rich story about these women. The play was familiar, like Zora took words from our household. Together, my daughters and I laughed (howled!), talked back to the play, cried, and left with lots to talk about. Days later, we were still quoting lines from the play and recounting our favorite moments. I’ll forever cherish that time with my daughters. I believe that is the goal of this play: an invitation to reflect on how you love, hurt, heal and dream, with family or alone. It is an honor to be a part of this production, to share Zora’s work with Chicago, and to collaborate with some of the most amazing actors, designers and collaborators in the city.
Most family secrets start or reveal themselves in a kitchen where you move through life’s best and worst moments. It’s a sacred space, a training place and a communal space. You are welcome in Mama’s kitchen. Thank you for supporting Shattered Globe and these tremendous artists.
–Malkia Stampley, Director
Land Acknowledgement
It is both new and extremely important to us at Shattered Globe to lead with stories from historically marginalized communities in our productions. We would like to acknowledge the space we are taking is on stolen and exploited land and invite our audiences to join us in considering how to best use our time and resources to dismantle both new and historic systems of oppression.
Content Warning
During your time in Mama’s kitchen, you will hear loud and startling sounds that may repeat. Please also note the use of various spices onstage during the show. If you have concerns about your physical or emotional responses to this or any other potentially triggering content, find a member of house staff for more information.
Special Thanks
Zack Berinstein, Adam Schulmerich, Devonte Washington, Aja Singletary, Marvinetta Woodley-Penn, Micah Figueroa, Mercury Theater, Red Twist Theater, Steep Theater, Theater Wit, CenterStage Productions of Illinois, and The Saints.

About Shattered Globe Theatre
Shattered Globe Theatre (Sandy Shinner, Producing Artistic Director) was born in a storefront space on Halsted Street in 1991. Since then, SGT has produced more than 80 plays, including nine American and world premieres, and garnered an impressive 42 Jeff Awards and 107 Jeff Award nominations, as well as the acclaim of critics and audiences alike.
Shattered Globe Theatre seeks to discover new connections between story, artist and audience by exploring drama from bold, challenging perspectives, and continuously redefining what it means to be an ensemble theatre.
SGT’s values are rooted in a commitment to racial equity, respect for all artists and support for the ensemble, while creating new opportunities to amplify traditionally marginalized voices and collaborate in all aspects of our work. Through initiatives such as the Protégé Program, Shattered Globe creates a space which allows emerging artists to grow and share in the ensemble experience.
